A transformative paradigm shift in renewable energy is unlocking the Earth's virtually limitless deep geothermal heat to deliver 24/7, weather-independent clean baseload power. Founded in 2018 as an MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center spin-off and headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Quaise Energy, Inc. is a pioneering climate-tech innovator commercializing superhot deep geothermal energy.
At the core of Quaise’s breakthrough is its proprietary millimeter-wave drilling technology, which replaces conventional mechanical drill bits with high-power gyrotron beams to vaporize hard crystalline rock. Gyrotrons—originally developed for plasma heating in nuclear fusion—reportedly allow drilling to extreme depths of 10 to 20 kilometers, where temperatures reach over 500°C. By accessing these superhot, supercritical geothermal conditions, the technology is said to extract up to ten times more energy per well than traditional shallow geothermal systems, providing clean energy anywhere on Earth.
Beyond technical innovation, Quaise aligns with long-term stakeholder governance by targeting the re-powering of retiring coal and gas power plants. By drilling directly at existing power plant sites, the company reuses existing steam turbines, electrical grid connections, and local industrial workforces, preserving regional jobs during the energy transition. Rather than relying on short-term speculative capital, Quaise has secured patient, long-term funding from strategic partners including Mitsubishi Corporation, Nabors Industries, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and the U.S. Department of Energy (ARPA-E).
The primary challenge for Quaise lies in scaling its millimeter-wave vaporization systems from field test rigs to full commercial-scale drilling platforms, alongside ensuring long-term borehole stability under extreme subterranean heat and pressure. Establishing safe, cost-effective operational protocols with global drilling partners remains the essential prerequisite for its commercial deployment.
We look forward to Quaise's continued challenges and successes. (AS)
